Chemical name: Vinyltrimethoxysilane
CAS number: 2768-02-7
Molecular formula: C₅H₁₂O₃Si
Molecular weight: 148.23 14
Appearance: Colorless to light yellow transparent liquid 112
Physical properties:
Boiling point: 123°C (normal pressure)
Flash point: 26-28°C (flammable liquid)
Density: 0.97 g/cm³
Refractive index: 1.3905-1.3935 (25°C)
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in organic solvents
(1) Polymer modification
Crosslinker: Vinyl is grafted onto the main chain of polymers such as polyethylene through free radical initiators (such as peroxides) to form hydrolyzable trimethoxysilane groups, and finally a Si-O-Si crosslinked network is formed through moisture curing, which significantly improves the heat resistance, creep resistance and chemical stability of the material.
Application scenarios: Industrial products such as wire and cable insulation, pipelines, and heat shrinkable films.
(2) Surface modifier
Inorganic-organic interface bonding: Reacts with hydroxyl groups on the surface of inorganic materials such as glass and metal to form stable siloxane bonds, thereby enhancing the interface bonding strength of composite materials.
Coatings and adhesives: Used in UV-cured coatings to improve water resistance and chemical corrosion resistance.
(3) Biomedical materials
Bone repair materials: Composited with hydroxyapatite, used in dental and orthopedic repair materials
Synthesis method: condensation reaction of methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol, purified by distillation and adding stabilizer (such as hydroquinone monomethyl ether) to prevent polymerization.
Purity standard: ≥98% (gas chromatography detection).
Packing specifications: 25kg galvanized steel drum, 200kg industrial barrel, or small glass bottle (such as 5mL-500mL)
Hazards:
Flammable (UN 1993, Class 3), flash point below 28°C.
Health risks: Harmful by inhalation (H332), skin irritation (H315), possible sensitization (H317).
Protective measures:
Wear protective gloves, goggles and gas masks during operation;
Store in a cool and dry place below 15°C, avoid contact with moisture.
Transportation requirements: Comply with UN 1993 hazardous chemicals transportation standards, packaging category III.
Environmentally friendly process: Compared with radiation or peroxide crosslinking, silane crosslinking technology has lower energy consumption and is suitable for the production of complex-shaped products.
Market demand: With the growing demand for high-performance materials in industries such as wires and cables and automotive parts, the annual growth rate of the VTMO market is expected to reach 5%-8%.
Further reading:
Research progress: Application of VTMO in graphene functionalization (improving the conductivity of composite materials) and preparation of molecular imprinted polymers.
Compliance certification: must comply with international standards such as REACH and FDA (food contact materials)
Vinyltrimethoxysilane is a colorless, transparent liquid with an ester odor. Boiling point 123°C, flash point 25°C. Relative density 0.89. Refractive index 1.40 (25°C). Soluble in ethanol, isopropanol, benzene, toluene and gasoline, insoluble in water; mixed with an acid solution to hydrolyze and dissolve in water. Slowly hydrolyzes in the air when encountering water vapor to generate the corresponding silanol.
1. Vinyl trimethoxysilane is an important crosslinking agent for crosslinked polyethylene. Compared with the general peroxide crosslinking and radiation crosslinking, its crosslinking process has the characteristics of simple equipment, low investment, easy control, wide range of polyethylene density, suitable for the production of fan-shaped wire cores of special shapes, and high extrusion speed. Since silane crosslinked polyethylene has excellent electrical properties, good heat resistance and stress cracking resistance, this product is widely used in the manufacture of wires, insulation and sheathing materials.
2. The crosslinked polyethylene made with this product as a crosslinking agent has good resistance to aromatics, oil, stress cracking, high mechanical strength, good heat resistance, etc., and can be used for 50 years at 80°C. It can be used for the anti-corrosion and thermal insulation outer protective layer of oil, natural gas and coal gas pipelines and the anti-corrosion and thermal insulation heat shrink sleeve patching materials matched therewith.
3. It can improve and enhance the electrical and thermal conductivity and increase the storage period of room temperature silicone rubber.
1. As a crosslinker for RTV single-component silicone rubber (alcohol type), used as a crosslinker in polymers (such as PE). As a coupling agent to treat various fibers, plastics, and inorganic fillers.
2. As a crosslinker for crosslinked polyethylene
3. As a glass fiber treatment agent
Vinyl trimethoxysilane is suitable for polyethylene and copolymers of various complex shapes and densities, suitable for large processing tolerances, filled composite materials, etc. It has a high operating temperature, excellent resistance to pressure cracking, memory, wear resistance and impact resistance. It has the functions of a coupling agent and a cross-linking agent. The applicable polymer types include polyethylene, polypropylene, unsaturated polyester, etc. It can also be used to improve the affinity between glass fiber, inorganic fillers and resins that react to vinyl. It is often used in silane cross-linked polyethylene cables and pipes.
