MTBE: The Gasoline Additive That Changed the Fuel Industry

What Is MTBE?

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a volatile, clear, colorless, flammable liquid with low viscosity. It belongs to the family of aliphatic ethers and has been one of the most widely produced fuel additives in modern history—with U.S. production exceeding 200,000 barrels per day in 1999.

The Primary Use: Gasoline Enhancement

MTBE's principal application is as a fuel additive in motor gasoline. When blended into gasoline, it serves two critical functions:

  • Octane Booster: MTBE significantly increases the octane rating of gasoline, with a Research Octane Number (RON) between 115–135. This helps prevent engine knocking and enables more efficient combustion.

  • Oxygenate: As an oxygenate, MTBE adds oxygen to the fuel blend, improving combustion efficiency and reducing harmful tailpipe emissions like carbon monoxide.

Key Properties That Made It Popular

MTBE's success as a fuel additive stems from several favorable characteristics:

  • High octane number (RON 116–120, MON 98–110)

  • Low vapor pressure

  • Good miscibility with gasoline—it blends seamlessly with hydrocarbon fuels

  • Oxygen content of approximately 18–19% by weight

  • Relatively low solubility in water compared to other oxygenates

The Environmental Controversy

Despite its performance benefits, MTBE became controversial due to its environmental behavior. The compound dissolves rather easily in water and spreads readily through groundwater. Leaks from underground storage tanks led to widespread groundwater contamination across the United States.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified MTBE as a "possible" human carcinogen under its 1986 cancer risk assessment guidelines. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) later classified MTBE and ETBE as Group 2B—"possibly carcinogenic to humans"—based on sufficient evidence of cancer in experimental animals.

Regulatory Response

In response to contamination concerns, many U.S. states began phasing out or banning MTBE as a fuel additive. The EPA initiated rulemaking to eliminate or limit MTBE use under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Today, ethanol has largely replaced MTBE as the primary oxygenate in U.S. gasoline, though MTBE remains in use in other parts of the world.

MTBE represents a classic case of a technological solution creating unintended environmental consequences. It delivered impressive octane-boosting and emission-reduction benefits but proved too mobile and persistent in water supplies.
