Ester compounds

Benzyl benzoate is a small molecule ester compound with a simple structure and a very faint balsamic aroma. It exists naturally in Peru balsam and Tolu balsam, and also in essential oils such as ylang-ylang oil, hyacinth oil, and tuberose oil. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents. It is a good high-temperature solvent and the only solvent for musk. Its application in pharmaceuticals and perfumes is determined by its non-volatile, good solvent properties, and the relatively stable characteristics of its esters. Benzyl benzoate is a scabicide for scabies, lice, and fleas. It has a better scabicide effect than sulfur and is non-irritating and non-greasy. It can also be used as an anti-larvae agent, often used in combination with butyl benzoate.

Freezing point

The freezing point of benzyl benzoate is ≥17℃. In winter, it solidifies into a solid. When using it, you can first place the benzyl benzoate package in a drying room (temperature 35-70℃) or a warm water bath (temperature 40-90℃) and wait for it to melt before use.

Content analysis

Chemical properties

White oily liquid, slightly viscous, pure benzyl benzoate is flaky crystals; has a faint plum and almond aroma; insoluble in water and glycerin, soluble in most organic solvents. In flavors, especially in floral fragrances, it is a good fixative, diluent or solvent. It can be used as a modifier in heavy floral and oriental fragrances, as well as fragrances such as tuberose, ylang-ylang, lilac, and gardenia. Benzyl benzoate is also a stabilizer for high-carbon aldehyde or alcohol fragrances, and a good solvent for some solid fragrances. It is also often used as a fixative in edible flavor formulas.

Uses

Benzyl benzoate can be used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, a flavor fixative, a candy flavoring, a plasticizer, and an insect repellent. When used as a flavor, the product specifications can refer to Shanghai Q/QBH68-79, and the ester content is more than 99%. It can be used as a fixative for a variety of floral flavors, and is also the only best solvent for solid flavors that are difficult to dissolve in flavors. It can dissolve artificial musk in flavors (1kg of benzyl benzoate can dissolve 0.45kg of sunflower musk, 0.205kg of ketone musk, or 0.28kg of xylene musk). It is also used to prepare whooping cough medicine, asthma medicine, etc. In addition, benzyl benzoate is also used in textile auxiliaries, scabies creams, pesticide intermediates, etc.; in textile auxiliaries, it is mainly used as a dyeing agent, a leveling agent, a repair agent, etc.; it is widely used in the field of polyester and compact fibers.

Production method

Benzyl benzoate exists naturally in Peru balsam, tuberose, carnation and Tolu balsam, etc. It is usually produced by chemical synthesis in industry. Add 7g (0.07mol) benzyl alcohol to a 100mL round-bottom flask, add 0.3g (0.013mol) of sodium metal within 30min and heat and dissolve it. After cooling to room temperature, slowly add it to a 250mL three-necked flask containing 45.4g (0.43mol) benzaldehyde. The mixture generates heat due to the reaction, and is cooled with water so that the temperature does not exceed 50-60℃. After about 30min, when the temperature stops rising, heat in a water bath and continue the reaction for 1h. After the reactants are cooled, wash them twice with 40ml of water. The obtained oil is distilled under reduced pressure, and benzyl alcohol, unreacted benzaldehyde and a small amount of water are first distilled out, and then the fraction at 184-185℃ (2kPa) is collected to obtain about 40g of product. 2C6H5CHO→C6H5COOCH2C6H5Benzyl alcohol and ethyl benzoate are transesterified in the presence of sodium carbonate. After the reaction is completed, ethanol is first removed by atmospheric distillation, and then benzyl alcohol is removed by reduced pressure distillation. After cooling, it is washed with water, layered, dried, and finally distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the product. C6H5COOCH2CH3+C6H5CH2OH[Na2CO3]→C6H5COOCH2C6H5+CH3CH2OH

Production method

It is prepared by co-esterification of sodium benzoate and benzoyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. Under stirring and cooling conditions, dissolve sodium in benzyl alcohol, then slowly add benzaldehyde. After the reaction is complete, heat it on a water bath for 1 to 2 hours, separate the precipitated oil layer, wash and fractionate it. It is prepared by esterification of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. It is obtained by transesterification of methyl (ethyl) benzoate with benzyl alcohol using sodium carbonate as a catalyst and then fractionating it.
