Storage conditions | 2-8°C |
Solubility | DMSO: 250 mg/mL (849.47 mM; requires sonication) |
Form | Solid |
Color | White to off-white |
Light yellow powder or flaky crystals. Melting point 134.5-136.5℃, soluble in 95% ethanol 1.8%, benzyl benzoate 25%, benzyl alcohol 13% and some other oily fragrances, flash point >100℃. It has a sweet and musky animal fragrance, which is soft and long-lasting.
It is prepared by tert-butylation, acetylation and nitration of m-xylene. When isobutyl alcohol is used as the alkylating agent for tert-butylation, the reaction temperature is 50-54°C. It is reasonable to use isobutylene for alkylation. In this case, aluminum chloride is used as a catalyst, and the generated 1,3-dimethyl-5-tert-butylbenzene is purified by vacuum distillation (boiling point is 85-90°C/0.0016-0.0019MPa). Acetylation uses aluminum chloride as a catalyst, and the reaction temperature is 58-60°C. Ferric chloride or zinc chloride can also be used, and the reaction temperature is 90-95°C. During the nitration reaction, nitric acid is first cooled to -8-10°C, and then 2,6-dimethyl-4-tert-butylacetophenone is added, and the reaction is carried out at -5-8°C. The nitration product is washed with water, and the resulting crude product is recrystallized from ethanol.
1.Ketone musk is one of the most important and best nitromusks and is a very good fixative. It is widely used in fragrance formulas and can be used wherever musk fragrance is needed, especially in sweet, oriental and heavy fragrances. It can produce powdery fragrance when used with methyl ionone, cinnamyl alcohol, benzyl salicylate, etc. It can be used in soap fragrances in appropriate amounts, generally at a dosage of 1%-5%.
2. It is one of the best fixatives and can be widely used in fragrance formulas. However, it is expensive and can only be used in high-end perfumes, powders and cream fragrances, generally at a dosage of 0.2%-1.5%.
3.Ketone musk has a similar natural musk aroma. The aroma is fantasy-like and realistic. It is used as a fixative for cosmetic fragrances and seasonal fragrances.
4. Used as a fixative for cosmetic fragrances and soap fragrances
