Aluminum sulfate CAS 10043-01-3

Aluminum sulfate CAS 10043-01-3

Aluminum sulfate (Al₂(SO₄)₃) is an inorganic compound, a white orthorhombic crystalline powder. It is used as a precipitant for rosin glue, wax emulsion and other sizing materials in the papermaking industry, a flocculant in water treatment, and a retention agent in foam fire extinguishers. It is also a raw material for making alum and aluminum white, and a petroleum decolorizer and deodorizer.

Aluminum sulfate Uses

Aluminum sulfate (chemical formula: Al₂(SO₄)₃) is an important inorganic compound, widely used in many fields.

I. Water treatment

Flocculant: Aluminum sulfate hydrolyzes to form aluminum hydroxide colloid, which adsorbs suspended matter and colloidal particles in water and is used for:

Drinking water purification: remove impurities and microorganisms.

Industrial wastewater treatment: treat wastewater containing heavy metals or organic matter.

Urban sewage and industrial circulating water treatment: reduce turbidity and pollutants.

II. Papermaking industry

Sizing agent: reacts with rosin soap to form hydrophobic precipitation, enhancing the water resistance of paper.

pH regulator: maintains an acidic papermaking environment and improves fiber bonding.

Filler and dye auxiliaries: improve filler retention and dyeing uniformity.

III. Textile printing and dyeing

Mordant: treat cotton and linen fibers before dyeing, fix dyes and improve color fastness.

pH adjustment: control the pH of the dyeing process and optimize dye adsorption.

IV. Firefighting

Fire extinguishing agent: reacts with sodium bicarbonate to generate CO₂ foam, used in traditional fire extinguishers (now gradually replaced).

V. Chemical raw materials

Preparation of aluminum salts: production of alum (KAl(SO₄)₂·12H₂O), polyaluminum chloride (PAC), etc., used for water treatment or industrial catalysis.

Precautions:

Corrosive: protection against contact with skin or metal equipment is required.

Environmental impact: excessive aluminum may pollute water or soil, and the dosage needs to be controlled.

The versatility of aluminum sulfate makes it indispensable in industry and people's livelihood, but the concentration and method should be adjusted according to the scene when using it, taking into account both effect and safety.

1 .Refined aluminum sulfate of various grades is used to make precipitants for paper sizing of various grades. When grades A, B and C are used for water purification, the arsenic (AS2O3) content should not exceed 0.01%.

2 .Aluminum sulfate particle size: All pass through a 10 mm mesh sieve, of which fine particles passing through an 8 mm mesh are not less than 98%, but can also be made into blocks according to user requirements.

3 .The appearance color of refined aluminum sulfate is white.

4 .Crude aluminum sulfate of various grades is used for water purification, and the purified aluminum sulfate used shall not be made with waste acid of toxic substances.

5 .The aluminum sulfate used for paper sizing should have an Al2O3 content of more than 12%, an iron content of less than 0.2%, and an insoluble matter of no more than 0.5%. The production of high-grade paper requires that the iron content in aluminum sulfate should be less than 0.08%. This type of aluminum sulfate is called iron-free aluminum sulfate.
