Colorless to yellow oily liquid. Has a mild, sweet rose scent with a bitter taste. Soluble in organic solvents, slightly soluble in water.

Use

●  Widely used in floral fragrances for daily use, and can also be made into ester fragrances, used as medicine for antibacterial and insect repellent

●  GB2760-96 stipulates that it is allowed to use edible spices. It is mainly used to prepare flavors such as apple, peach, apricot, plum, strawberry, lemon, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey.

●  It is a natural flavor and fragrance, which can be used to make perfume and can also be used as a raw material for synthesizing vitamin E.

●  Geraniol is one of the important spices. Often shared with citronellol and phenylethyl alcohol, it is the basic spice for all kinds of rose essence and preparation of geranium oil, and is widely used in flower essence, especially rose. It can also be used in limited quantities in the Chemicalbook essence of tuberose, vanilla, acacia, orange blossom, violet, sweet-scented osmanthus, ylang-ylang, carnation, and magnolia. It can also be used in appropriate amount of edible flavors such as apples, apricots, strawberries, raspberries, plums, peaches, honey, and cherries.

●  Geraniol is the main agent of rose essence, and it is also an indispensable flavoring raw material in all kinds of floral essences. Products prepared from natural essential oils, food preparations, and daily cosmetic essences contain more than 90% of geraniol, and when used to prepare soap essences, contain more than 80% of geraniol. The industrial products geraniol and nerol are the raw materials for the manufacture of vanillyl alcohol, vanillin, citral, hydroxyvanillin, ionone and vitamin A. Various esters synthesized with geraniol are also good spices.

Production method

●  The industrial production of geraniol uses myrcene as the raw material. The primary chloride of myrcene is co-heated with sodium acetate to obtain the acetate mixture of geraniol and nerol. This crude ester is then saponified and distilled to obtain a mixture containing about 60% geraniol and 40% nerol, and high-grade geraniol can be obtained by careful fractionation. Using a-pinene as raw material, high-quality geraniol can be produced from linalool.

●  Geraniol can be obtained by freeing from natural essential oils such as Chemicalbook cogongrass oil and Indian rose vanilla oil: adding anhydrous calcium chloride to the essential oil can generate crystalline derivatives of geraniol, which are decomposed into geraniol and geraniol when exposed to water. Calcium chloride, the precipitated oil layer is washed with warm water, and then purified by steam distillation. Citral is formed by reduction of sodium amalgam in a dilute ethanol solution of acetic acid; or by co-heating of linalool with water under the catalysis of boric acid or borate.
