Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate (TSPP) is a versatile inorganic compound used in a wide range of applications. It serves as a buffering agent, emulsifier, dispersing agent, thickening agent, and sequestrant.
Food Industry: Used as a food additive in products like chicken nuggets, crab meat, and canned tuna. It modifies proteins to retain moisture in meat, seafood, and dairy products. In processed cheese, it buffers pH and promotes emulsification, and it is used to prevent after-cooking blackening in potatoes.
Dental Hygiene: An active ingredient in toothpaste and dental floss as a tartar control agent and in dental rinses to aid in plaque reduction.
Industrial Applications: Used in water softeners, detergents, and as a metal cleaner. It also serves as a chelating agent and is used in electroplating and bleaching operations.
Hazards: The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Inhalation of dust can cause coughing and sore throat.
Reactivity: TSPP is basic and reacts exothermically with acids. It is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and decomposes in ethyl alcohol.
First Aid: In case of eye contact, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical attention. For skin contact, wash with water and soap. If inhaled, move to fresh air and rest.
Personal Protection: Use protective gloves and safety spectacles. In case of dust, a particulate filter respirator may be necessary.
